Kuwait and China to see ‘enhanced cooperation’ in development projects

Kuwait: His Highness Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Prime Minister of Kuwait, chaired on Wednesday the 33rd meeting of the ministerial committee tasked with following up on the country’s major development projects. During the meeting at Bayan Palace, Sheikh Ahmad reviewed the outcomes of Chinese Vice President Han Zheng’s visit to Kuwait on November 1-2, described as “fruitful” in a press release published by Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

The discussions covered cooperation in the economic, investment, trade, industrial, transport, infrastructure, energy, artificial intelligence, food security, digital, and civil aviation sectors, among others, the statement said.

He added that the seven agreements and memoranda of understanding signed on September 22, 2023, during the Amir’s visit to China, marked a “turning point” in bilateral relations. The Prime Minister noted that these agreements “paved the way for understanding between the two governments and the start of implementing major joint development projects.”

Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs and committee member Ambassador Sameeh Johar Hayat said the meeting discussed several detailed issues for the current and upcoming phases, both of which “will see enhanced cooperation with the Chinese government through activating and implementing bilateral agreements.” Hayat said the meeting reviewed progress on major projects, including the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port, cooperation in the electrical power system, renewable energy development and establishing a low-carbon green system for waste recycling. It also covered housing development, environmental infrastructure for wastewater treatment plants and efforts to combat desertification. He added that Kuwait and China will continue exploring “diverse and available investment opportunities on both sides.”
